Itinerary
Your Afoyo African Safaris guide collects you at Kigali International Airport or from your hotel in the city, and the safari is under way.
You head south towards Nyungwe Forest National Park, stopping for some culture on the way. First is Nyanza King’s Palace, a restored royal residence that explains the traditional monarchy of Rwanda. Then comes Butare Museum, which goes further into the history and heritage of the country.
After these visits the road continues over rolling hills to Nyungwe Forest. You arrive in the evening, check in at your lodge and rest after the journey.
After an early breakfast you drive to the briefing point for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Experienced park guides take you into the forest to find the chimpanzees. The length of the walk depends on where they are that day. Other primates, birds, butterflies and the rich plant life of the rainforest are all part of it.
Next is the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walk, a walkway hung above the rainforest with beautiful views over the trees. There are few better ways to take in the forest.
Later you visit a tea plantation to see how Rwandan tea is grown, picked and processed. Dinner and the night are at your lodge.
After breakfast you leave Nyungwe and drive to Volcanoes National Park in the north of Rwanda.
The road passes scenic hills, farms and villages, and the landscape keeps changing. Volcanoes National Park is known for bamboo forest, volcanic peaks, golden monkeys and endangered mountain gorillas.
You reach your lodge near the park, check in and rest ahead of the gorilla trek the next day.
After an early breakfast you drive to the park headquarters for the gorilla trekking briefing.
You are given a gorilla group, and ranger guides lead you into the forest. The walk can take a few hours, depending on how the gorillas move. When you find the family you have one unforgettable hour watching them at home, eating, resting, moving about and interacting.
After the trek you go back to the lodge for lunch and a rest.
In the afternoon you visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, also called Gorilla Guardians Village. Through traditional dance, storytelling, local customs and displays of heritage, the community introduces you to Rwandan culture.
After breakfast you leave for Akagera National Park in the east of Rwanda.
Akagera shows you another Rwanda: open savannah, wetlands, lakes, woodland and rolling hills. It is the country's main area for a wildlife safari, with elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos, crocodiles and a number of bird species.
You check in at your lodge and rest for a while, then go out on an evening game drive.
The day begins with a morning game drive in Akagera National Park.
Your guide takes you through several parts of the park to look for wildlife. Depending on the day, you may see giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, antelopes, elephants and many birds.
In the afternoon there is an optional boat trip on Lake Ihema, with chances to see hippos, crocodiles and water birds, and fine views of the lake.
Dinner and the night are at the lodge.
After breakfast you check out and drive back to Kigali.
If your flight time allows, you can take a short tour of the city. It may include the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local markets, craft shops or other places of interest.
After the tour we take you to Kigali International Airport for your flight, or drop you at your hotel.
