Itinerary
Your Afoyo African Safaris guide collects you early in the morning in Entebbe or Kampala.
The road leads west across attractive country, past villages, hills, farms and green plantations. Lunch may be at Igongo Country Hotel & Cultural Centre in Mbarara, where you also get a short introduction to Ankole culture.
From there you go on to Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of the most visited wildlife areas in Uganda. You arrive in time for an evening game drive on the savannah, where elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, warthogs and many birds may be seen.
Breakfast is early, and then you make for Kyambura Gorge to track chimpanzees.
Ranger guides lead you through the forest in the gorge to look for habituated chimpanzees. Monkeys, birds, butterflies and unusual plants are often seen on the way.
Afterwards you drive on towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park by way of the Ishasha Sector, known for its rare tree-climbing lions. Keep watch for lions lying in the fig trees, and for elephants, topis, buffaloes and other animals.
You get to Bwindi in the evening and check in at your lodge.
After an early breakfast you drive to the park headquarters to be briefed by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.
Then you walk into the forest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in search of mountain gorillas. The trek can last a few hours; it depends where the family is. When you reach them, you have one unforgettable hour watching them eat, move about, rest and interact at home in the forest.
You have lunch and a rest at the lodge, then meet the Batwa. Members of the community tell you about their heritage in the forest, their music and dance, their traditional way of life and their ancient bond with the rainforest.
Set off after breakfast for Entebbe or Kampala. The drive passes rolling hills, terraced fields, villages and open farmland. If time allows there may be stops for lunch, for photographs or at the Equator line.
You arrive in the evening and are dropped at your hotel, or at the airport if you are flying on.
