Itinerary
Your visit starts when we collect you from your lodge, or with a welcome briefing at the office of the Mubaku Community Project in Mubaku Village. Your guide tells you the history of the community and explains how tourism supports education, healthcare and wildlife conservation here.
You set off on an easy walk through the village and see the crops local farmers grow: cassava, maize, millet, beans, groundnuts and fruit in season. You hear how the land is farmed in the traditional way and how farming keeps households going.
As you walk, your guide describes the mix of cultures in the area and the traditions of the communities that live around Murchison Falls National Park.
You call at a traditional family home and go inside to see rural life as it is really lived. During the visit you find out:
- How traditional houses are constructed using locally available materials.
- Techniques used to protect homes from termites.
- Traditional methods of preventing wildfire damage.
- How local kitchens are built and how meals are prepared using firewood.
- Daily life in a rural Ugandan household.
It is a practical lesson in knowledge that has been handed down for generations.
You hear, in the villagers' own words, how the Mubaku community lives side by side with the wildlife of Murchison Falls National Park: the difficulties this brings, and the conservation work that protects the animals while improving life for local people.
A lively performance of traditional music, drumming, singing and local dances. Guests are welcome to join in, pick up a few steps and get to know members of the community.
You meet the teachers and pupils of the community school, founded to give local children a better chance of an education. You hear what the school has achieved, what is being built next and how responsible tourism helps pay for children's schooling.
The tour moves on to the Mubaku Community Medical Centre, where you learn about the healthcare it provides to the surrounding villages. Your guide explains how tourism and community partnerships helped to set up this vital facility.
You go back to your lodge or carry on with the safari activities you have planned in Murchison Falls National Park.
