Mount Nyamuragira: Africa’s Most Active Volcano

Mount Nyamuragira in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: its formation, location, 3,058 m height, nearby communities, volcanic activity, and how to get there.

Mount Nyamuragira, also known as Nyamulagira, is one of Africa’s most active volcanoes. Located in North Kivu Province in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), it forms part of the Virunga volcanic region and the Albertine Rift. Unlike the steep Mount Nyiragongo, Nyamuragira is a broad shield volcano formed mainly by repeated basaltic lava flows.

Goma is the main gateway to the Nyamuragira and Virunga region. Travellers may reach Goma by air or through Rwanda, subject to current border and security conditions. Access to Nyamuragira itself is restricted and should only be arranged through Afoyo African Safaris.

Eastern Lowland Gorilla Trekking

Kahuzi-Biega National Park is one of Congo’s most important natural treasures. Located near Bukavu in eastern Congo, the park is known for its tropical forest, volcanic landscapes, and eastern lowland gorillas. These gorillas are larger than mountain gorillas and are found in a very limited part of Central Africa.

The experience takes you into thick forest with trained guides and trackers who understand the terrain, the gorillas, and the importance of protecting this fragile environment. It is quiet, humbling, and deeply memorable.

For many visitors, the river adds depth to the journey.

Depending on the route and itinerary, river experiences can be included as part of a cultural, city, or nature-focused trip.
